Do soap boxes with lids come with a recess for the bar?
Yes. A recess cut into the base or a separate card tray holds the bar still, and the proof marks which of the two you are getting.

Written prices from £0.25 a box. Free proof, made in 4–6 business days, free tracked UK delivery.
A lid changes how a bar is opened. The customer lifts a flap or a lid and finds the bar sitting in a tray, which is why lidded boxes sell at the gift end of a range. We make hinged lid cartons, two-piece lid and base boxes and three-bar trays, sized to your bar.

| Bar | Typical box size |
|---|---|
| One round 80 mm bar | About 100 x 100 x 40 mm hinged lid with a recess |
| One 100 g rectangular bar | About 110 x 80 x 40 mm lid and base |
| One 150 g square bar | About 100 x 100 x 45 mm lift-off lid |
| Three 100 g bars side by side | About 240 x 95 x 35 mm tray with a hinged lid |
| Two 120 g bars | About 190 x 90 x 40 mm two-piece box |
Soap boxes with lids are cartons where the top opens as a lid rather than a tuck flap.
A hinged lid folds back from the base, a two-piece lid lifts off entirely, and a tray box holds one or more bars in cut recesses under the lid. They are made to your bar size and printed to your design.
There are three answers, and the photos on this page show all three.
The lilac box has a lid hinged along the back edge that folds flat, with side flaps that fold out and a recess in the base that holds a round bar still.
The pale green boxes are tray boxes. A card tray with cut recesses sits inside a hinged cover, and the cover closes with a tab. One version holds a single bar and the other holds three in a row.
The third style is the two-piece lid and base. The lid lifts off completely, which is the construction used for most rigid gift boxes.
A lidded box costs more board than a tuck end carton, so it tends to be used where the bar is sold as a present or at a higher price.
The brands below are the ones who ask for lids most. If your bars are mostly sold singly from a market table, a tuck end box from our range of bath and body boxes may be the better fit.
Round bars are the usual reason for a lidded box, because they do not sit well in a tuck end carton.
Measure the diameter and the thickness of the bar after curing.
The recess in the base is cut about 3 mm larger than the bar so it drops in without catching. The outer box is then about 10 mm larger than the recess on each side, which gives room for the hinge and the side flaps.
For a bar about 80 mm across and 25 mm thick, that means a box of roughly 100 x 100 x 40 mm. Three rectangular 100 g bars side by side need a tray about 240 x 95 x 35 mm, as the UK cosmetic box size chart shows.
Each lid type suits a different job and a different budget.
We quote board, rigid and finish choices on request.
| Lid type | How it is made | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Hinged lid carton | One piece of folding board, lid creased along the back, ships flat | Single bars, mid-price ranges, mail order |
| Tray with hinged cover | Card tray with cut recesses glued into a folded cover with a tab | Three-bar sets, wedding favours |
| Two-piece lid and base | Rigid greyboard with a printed wrap, lid lifts off | Gift counters, bars sold with a dish |
| Lid and base with a sleeve | Two-piece box held shut by a printed band | Limited runs where the band changes |
A lid is the one part of a soap box the customer looks at while it is open.
Printing the underside of the lid is possible on folding and rigid boxes alike, and it costs far less than people expect.
A short line about the maker, the scent notes or care of the bar reads well there. A flat colour or a pattern that matches the outer print also works.
On the outside, soft touch lamination with an embossed logo gives a lidded box the feel of a gift. Foil stamping on the lid is the other finish we quote most. The embossing and foil finishes explained page shows both.
A lidded box is wider than the bar, so something has to hold the bar in place.
The cheapest answer is a recess cut into the base panel, as in the lilac box.
The next step up is a separate card tray with a cut-out for each bar. The tray can be a different colour from the box, which frames the soap nicely.
Foam inserts are an option for rigid boxes where the bar is heavy or the box will be carried in a bag. Tissue on request softens the look and stops a scented bar marking the board.
Hinged lid cartons arrive flat and are folded by your team.
The sequence below takes a few seconds once you have done it twice.
A lidded box reads best lying flat with the lid up, so the customer sees the bar in its recess.
Keep one open as a sample and stack the rest closed behind it.
Three-bar trays lie flat too. Stand one on a small easel so the row of bars faces the shop.
If you sell the bar with a dish, a cloth or a second product, a larger two-piece box with a divided insert does the job. The soap gift boxes for bars and sets page covers those.
Ordering a hinged lid carton in thin board is the common one.
A lid needs about 400 gsm to stay flat; lighter board curls after a week on a warm shelf.
Forgetting the recess is the second. Without one, the bar slides across the base every time the box is picked up.
Printing a dark solid colour on the inside of the lid without a lamination is the third. Fingerprints show, so add a matt lamination option or keep the inside print light.
Tell us the bar size and shape, how many bars go in one box, the lid style and the quantity.
Orders are priced individually from £0.25 per unit, with the final figure on a written quote.
A free design proof shows the lid, the base and the recess with your artwork in place. Approve it and we spend 4 to 6 business days making the boxes.
UK delivery is free and tracked and usually takes 2 to 3 business days. Damage or a misprint reported inside 10 days, with photos, gets a reprint or a refund. Upload your logo on the Design Your Packaging page to see it on a lidded box first.
Choose a real photo of the box you have in mind, put your logo on it, pick a colour and finish, and send it over. Our designers turn it into a free, print-ready proof.

The more we know about what goes inside, the bottle or jar, the quantity and the look you are after, the sharper the price. A packaging specialist replies within one business day with a written quote and a free design proof.
