How thick is the board in a luxury rigid perfume box?
About 2 mm greyboard is standard, with 3 mm as an option on larger boxes or where a thicker visible edge is wanted.

Written prices from £0.25 a box. Free proof, made in 4–6 business days, free tracked UK delivery.
Thick greyboard boxes wrapped in printed paper, with a lid that lifts off or hinges open and an insert that holds the bottle dead centre. Foil over a deep colour, a linen wrap or a soft touch black, as options.

| Container | Typical box size |
|---|---|
| 50 ml heavy glass spray | 90 x 90 x 150 mm |
| 75 ml extrait bottle | 95 x 95 x 160 mm |
| 100 ml spray with a stopper | 110 x 100 x 185 mm |
| 100 ml plus 15 ml travel spray | 160 x 110 x 185 mm |
Luxury rigid perfume boxes are made from greyboard of about 2 to 3 mm, wrapped in printed paper and assembled by hand.
They come as lid and base, a lid on a neck, or a hinged lid, and hold the bottle in a foam or card insert. Wrap, foil and insert options are confirmed on a written quote.
Weight, mostly.
A rigid box in 2 mm board with a fitted insert weighs several times what a carton does, and the hand notices before the eye.
Then the wrap. A deep navy printed with a gold foil floral, as on the box pictured, is one route. A linen paper with a blind embossed name is another. Both read as a different class of object from a laminated carton.
Last, the fit. The bottle lifts out of the insert with a fingertip and drops back in with a small resistance. Nothing rattles, nothing slides, and the lid closes with a slow push of air.
Perfume houses with an extrait or parfum concentration, where the bottle alone may cost more than a whole run of cartons.
The box has to match the glass.
Niche brands selling at perfumeries and department store counters, where the box is displayed open beside the bottle. Boutique hotels and spas with a signature scent sold in the lobby.
Bridal and anniversary buyers also order small runs for a single gift. For a bottle and a candle together, the cosmetic gift boxes for two or more items extend the same build to a wider footprint.
A lid and base box is two open trays, one slightly larger, that nest.
It is the classic perfume presentation and the lid can be deep or shallow.
A lid on a neck adds a third tray glued inside the base that stands proud. The lid sits on this neck and leaves a thin band of the base showing, often in a contrast colour.
A hinged lid is attached along the back edge and opens like a book. The magnetic lid perfume boxes with hidden magnets are this style with a magnetic close. All three are rigid and all are available with the wraps and inserts described here.
| Style | How it opens | Feels like | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lid and base | Lid lifts straight off | Classic, calm | Any upright bottle, shallow or deep lid |
| Lid on a neck | Lid lifts off a raised inner tray | Tailored, with a contrast band | Heavier bottles, a two-colour look |
| Hinged lid | Lid swings back on a hinge | Like opening a book | Display open on a counter, inside lid print |
| Sleeve and tray | Tray slides from a sleeve | Discreet, no loose lid | Bottle laid flat, sets with a mini |
Rigid boxes carry an insert, so the maths is bottle plus insert wall plus board.
Take a 100 ml bottle of 60 x 45 x 155 mm. With 20 mm foam walls and 2.5 mm board it ends about 110 x 100 x 185 mm outside.
Thinner foam walls shrink the box but make it look mean. Fifteen to twenty millimetres of insert around the glass is the range that looks generous without wasting shelf space.
Allow 8 to 10 mm between the cap and the underside of the lid. A stopper or a tall cap needs its own cut in the insert so the bottle sits straight.
Greyboard of 2 mm is the usual wall for a perfume box this size.
Three millimetre board is an option when the box is large or you want a thicker edge on show.
The board is cut and vee-grooved so the corners fold cleanly, then the printed wrap is glued over it and the edges turned in by hand. The inside is lined with a plain or printed paper.
Board, rigid and finish options are available on request. The cosmetic box styles guide shows the construction of each rigid style side by side.
The wrap sets the tone.
A soft touch laminated wrap in black or a deep colour is the safe choice. Linen and textured papers add grain without print, and a metallic paper under a dark ink gives a foil look across the whole box.
Foil stamping is the finish most buyers ask for, usually a pattern or a name in gold or copper. Blind embossing, which presses the board with no ink or foil, suits a crest on a linen wrap.
Spot UV over a matt wrap gives a tone-on-tone pattern that only shows when the box is tilted. Our guide to foil stamping and embossing compares all of them on dark board.
The insert is foam, cut to the bottle's outline and flocked or wrapped in paper.
A card insert with a cut-out is a lighter option. Both are on request and drawn on the proof.
A tissue or satin lining under the lid is another option. It covers the insert when the box opens and is folded back by the customer.
Rigid boxes travel well, but the wrap corners mark if they rub. Each box is packed in tissue inside the shipping carton, and for posting to customers an outer mailer with padding is worth the small extra cost.
At a perfumery counter the box is usually open with the bottle in place and the lid propped behind.
A lid-on-neck style shows its contrast band this way; a hinged lid shows its inside print.
Closed, the box is a block of colour with one mark on it. Resist the urge to add more. A single foil name on a deep wrap reads as expensive; three fonts and a tagline do not.
The base of the box is seen when a customer lifts it, so a printed base, even plain colour, finishes the job.
A loose insert is the first.
If the bottle wobbles in its well, the whole box feels careless, however good the wrap.
Gloss lamination over a dark wrap is the second. It shows every fingerprint and reflects shop lighting, so the colour never looks as deep as the proof.
The third is a lid that fits too easily. A rigid lid should take a second to lift because of the air trapped under it, and a loose lid slides off in a gift bag.
Send the bottle details, your wrap and finish ideas and the quantity.
Rigid boxes are quoted per order, from £0.25 per unit, and the written quote sets everything out.
Our designers lay out the wrap for free and send a proof with the box rendered open and closed. Once approved, the run takes 4 to 6 business days and ships free, tracked, to any UK address in 2 to 3 business days.
If anything arrives misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days with photos for a reprint or refund. The quote form for rigid perfume boxes is the place to start.
Choose a real photo of the box you have in mind, put your logo on it, pick a colour and finish, and send it over. Our designers turn it into a free, print-ready proof.

The more we know about what goes inside, the bottle or jar, the quantity and the look you are after, the sharper the price. A packaging specialist replies within one business day with a written quote and a free design proof.

Yes. A neck is an inner tray that stands proud of the base, so the lid sits on it and leaves a band of the base showing. It suits a two-colour design.
Foil stamping presses metallic foil onto the wrap before it is glued to the board. It is an option alongside printed metallic inks, and the two look different.
Yes, linen and textured papers are options. They take foil and blind embossing well and hide fingerprints better than a smooth wrap.
Foam cut to the bottle and flocked or paper-wrapped, or a card insert with a cut-out. Both are available on request and shown on the proof.
Yes, the insert is cut with a second well. Add about 50 mm to the width for a travel spray beside a 100 ml bottle.
Yes. Rigid boxes cannot ship flat, so each arrives built with the insert fitted and wrapped in tissue inside the carton.
Yes, the inside lining can be a printed or coloured paper. On a hinged box the inside of the lid is a full printed panel.
About 15 to 20 mm of insert wall around the glass and 8 to 10 mm above the cap. Less looks mean, more wastes shelf space.
Matt or soft touch, in most cases. Gloss shows fingerprints and reflects shop lighting, which makes a dark colour look lighter than the proof.
Production is 4 to 6 business days after the free proof is approved, then 2 to 3 business days for free tracked UK delivery.
No set figure. Quantities are quoted per order, so a short run for a bespoke scent is quoted the same way as a large one.
